A WRITER WRITES...

when i was young, i wrote poetry by the ...i don't know... lots of poetry. it flowed out of me. it lingered in my head, interrupted my sleep, tripped up my tongue when i tried to talk...generally my brain and its inclinations were a hindrance. i didn't write much of it down. but my father proudly preserved every scrap of poetry i ever did put to paper. bless his heart. some of it, as i read it now, isn't half bad! much of it i don't recognize. something deep inside me came spilling out, bypassing my cognitive mind altogether. recently (well, this year) i actually wrote a poem in my sleep. it woke me up. i got up, scribbled it down, and went back to bed. in the morning, wow! what a nice surprise. a beautifully satisfying poem that my subconscious had written- much better than anything from the front of my brain. thank you, back brain! here's that poem...

A slight rain came today-
a slender slanting slide
that milked the sky of gossamer
and made the shadows hide.

it never lifted air-
it dropped a dripping dew
that paled the yellow buildings white
and ran the colors through.

poetry. a way to condense something into the smallest amount of wordspace possible, in order to evoke the greatest emotion or reflection from the reader.

poetry. words that on first reading may not make sense, but create within the mind or heart of the reader a connection.

poetry. verbal art.
